I lost a run and immediately started a new one. That’s the short version of what Pokerogue has done to me lately.
It’s a fan-made, browser-based project—not an official Nintendo or Game Freak thing—that takes Pokémon battles and drops them into a roguelite loop, and I honestly didn’t expect that combination to click for me the way it did. The structure is simple to grasp: you move through waves of wild Pokémon, trainers, and bosses, collecting items and catching Pokémon along the way. But the run itself never feels simple. Every wave seems to ask, “What are you going to do with the team you have?”
Building a team is harder than picking favorites
In Classic Mode, you choose from your unlocked starter collection and build a team within a cost limit. Each starter has its own cost, so you can’t just grab the strongest-looking options and call it done. I made that mistake early. I picked a Pokémon because it looked strong and interesting, then realized the rest of the team didn’t cover anything and I was paying for it in ways I couldn’t patch up mid-run.
Catching Pokémon during runs is the other half of the fun. It’s not just about this attempt—anything you catch can help improve your starter options for future attempts, which made me think about runs differently. A mediocre run still contributed to something.
Items stack, and that changes everything
The item system was a bigger deal than I expected. Items stack across a run, so a choice you make in the early waves can snowball into something that saves you later. I didn’t appreciate that at first. I grabbed what sounded helpful and didn’t think about synergy. After a couple of failed runs, I started looking at reward choices as long-term decisions rather than instant fixes.
Also, Egg Vouchers—they go into the Egg Gacha and can hatch Pokémon or unlock Egg Moves, which opens up starter options over time. I didn’t expect random eggs to matter to me as much as they did.
How I use the PokéRogue Dex when I’m unsure
I used to just guess when I didn’t recognize a Pokémon, and that’s exactly how you make costly mistakes. That’s when I started checking the Pokerogue Dex while planning a Pokémon team—not as a full-time thing, just when I want to confirm details instead of committing blind.
When I’m deciding, I use it to check things like a Pokémon’s typing, abilities, and general stats, and sometimes I want more practical info: starter cost, evolution requirements, available moves, and which biome a Pokémon can appear in. Knowing where something shows up changed how I planned runs. Knowing how something evolves changed which starter I felt comfortable picking. It turned “maybe this works” into something closer to an actual decision.
Daily Run keeps things fresh
The Daily Run is a rotating challenge with a shared daily setup, so everyone’s working from the same starting point. I like it because it forces me out of my usual picks. There’s no room to lean on comfort choices—the game hands you a situation and you adapt.
What I learned from losing
Balance beats raw power. Type coverage, defensive options, and a team that can handle multiple kinds of battles beat one flashy Pokémon. I also learned to stop obsessing over a single strong catch and start thinking about how the next five waves will play out.
Come play with me
If you grew up on Pokémon and you like the idea of a Pokémon roguelite, give PokéRogue a try. It’s free, it runs in your browser, and it’s perfect for “I’ll just do one run” — which, in my experience, is a lie we tell ourselves.
Play a run, and tell me how yours went. I’d bet we both end up saying the same thing: okay, one more.
